Time again to update you on how our week in Chopsticks has been! Last week we had our ‘Learn to China’ night where we were… learning 0_o We were learning Mandarin, Cantonese and Chinese calligraphy! And the learning topic this time was ‘family’ representing the importance of a family-like bond within Chopsticks! I can tell you its much harder than learning family names in English; there’s at least 4 different words for ‘cousin’ depending on whether they’re on your mother or father’s side and whether they’re older or younger than you! Sure is a lot to remember! Guess I need more practice!

Anyways, next week, we’ll be taking a small break on our activities ); Why? Well, we know how much you looooove Chopsticks but you should know we also think of you! And we want you to do well in Uni so we’re leaving some time for you to study (or there is the slight chance that our inept committee has been slacking off the organising… Nahhh, the first reason sounds more legit)

Last week we had our Movie Night where we enjoyed the tradition Chinese movie, ‘New Dragon Gate Inn’ (we had a change of plans)! The movie was funny (Mandarin dubs were hilarious terrible) as well as epic! And not surprisingly, the ending is still great after all these years.

Anyways, next week, we’ll be teaching Cantonese, Mandarin and Chinese calligraphy, so be sure to join us in one of our Chopsticks Cultural Workshops! We’ve named this one ‘Learn to China’ (yes… keep looking for the pun… you find it eventually *suspicious look*). As usual, snacks and drinks will be provided, so make sure you turn up, learn a few new things, make some friends and enjoy yourself!

CHOPSTICKS HOTPOT NIGHT

Last week we had our highly anticipated Hunger Games Night and as expected, it was legendary! We played games including Bang and Ultimate Ninja, as well as some games we invented ourselves! On a negative note… food was lacking; Two slices of pizza per person?! Ridiculous! Well, guess they didn’t call it Hunger Games Night for nothing ._. But despite starving, everyone enjoyed themselves and made new friends! …and I remember some people went crazy whacking each other with pool noodles *cough*Thanks Jas *cough*.

Next week we’ll be settling down a bit with Chopsticks Movie Night where we’ll be chilling in a quiet atmosphere watching a 1980′s Chinese comedy classic, “Peking Opera Blues”. Details below.

The week after that we’ll be holding a Chinese Cultural Workshop teaching Cantonese and Mandarin! Stay tuned for the details!

So, this coming Wednesday, at the Student Lounge in Holme Building (NOT ISL), we will be watching Tsui Hark’s 1986 comedy classic “Peking Opera Blues (刀馬旦).”

Set in the 1920′s, Peking Opera Blues follows the story of three unlikely heroines a box of jewels, a warlord and a theatre where Peking Opera is performed by men. It is by turns a grand adventure, a farce about democracy and a story concerning the empowerment of women.

Last Monday our Chopstickers enjoyed buns, tea and mahjong in our joint event with TeaSoc and TCA. Although it wasn’t the most hyped up event, everyone enjoyed the food and tea and took a bit of time to relax and socialise after a week of handing in assignments and mid-semester exams.
Next week, we’ll be turning up the dial and the intense competition shall begin! Man shall battle man! Spears will be throw, arrows fired! Blood will be spilt because next week is the event you’ve all been waiting for… Chopstick’s HUNGER GAMES NIGHT! Details are below ;P

Hope you’ve all been enjoying your Easter break; hanging out with friends, watching movies, relaxing and studying! Well, the Chopsticks committee certainly has! Just last Friday, we enjoyed a nice formal dinner at Kobe Jones and more than I could say in words, the food certainly was worth its price! So, we spent a night enjoying the food, checking out the harbour view, socialising and pretty much just having a great time. (I also believe we managed to persuade the waitress in joining Chopsticks!)

Chopsticks tired and weary from camp? NEVER. In fact, we were so full of energy that we had a sports day on the next weekend. For those of you who came, it was a bright and sunny afternoon of sporty and picnicy fun with an enthusiastic bunch of Chopstickers~

We played soccer, volleyball, a bit of footy, and even a few games of bullrush!

There’s nothing like a healthy dose of sports to beat the fatigue and uni stress! And a special shout out to Chengchen and Veronica for preparing a delicious picnic to keep us sustained as we sweated it out in the sun!

We are proud to say that Chopsticks 2012 camp was a roaring success! A little rain could, in no way, hamper a whole weekend of fun, new friends and most importantly, the Chopsticks family spirit.

There was all sorts of crazy fun going on wherever you turned. From twister mayhem….

… to Mafia and Jenga …

… a fiery bonfire …

… lots and lots of love and new friends ….

… and most importantly, Port Stephen’s signature SAND DUNES =D

A perfect opportunity to partake in some creatively crafted beach activities like wheelbarrow racing…

and most importantly, WRESTLING

It was so much fun that even the girls got in… you show them how it’s done ladies!

Afterwards we crowned our winners, congratulations to the Gold Kirin team.

A special thanks to the committee for organising camp!! Special thanks for Jade, Toby, Mac, Steph and Casey for all their hard work in running the activities and preparing food.

Chopsticks Camp Reunion Picnic and sports Day~

Join Chopsticks for some good old fashioned exercise this coming Saturday, guaranteed to get those hearts pumping (a bit faster).

What better (legal) way to blow off some steam than to play a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, rugby, badminton and volleyball.

And for those of you who count walking up and across the footbridge on City Road as your own form of exercise, we will also have a number of fun relays and games for those who are less inclined toward physical activity.

A picnic and lots of sustenance will be provided during/after the games
