MID SEM NEWSLETTER :)

WHEW. So the long awaited MID SEM BREAK HAS FINALLY ARRIVED. (Pffft… as if Mid sem USYD, it’s WEEK 9.. )

ANYWAY. TO savour the last day of freedom we’ve planned…

Bush Walking with Chopsticks!

SO WE ARE GOING BUSH WALKING!! We are heading to the Blue Mountains area, Wentworth Falls to be specific for a whole DAY.

We are going to take you on an amazing bush walking experience on one of the best hiking tracks available. There are trees, little animals, birds, trees, LOTs of waterfalls, amazing lookouts and more trees :D !

AND we will be picnicking right next to a WATERFALL!! So half way through we will reach a picnic area in which we will rest up, chat, play games and EAT. If you bring shorts you can even wade into the water. Check the photos :)

Sound exciting? Well it is! Not athletic? Neither are WE :D . Don’t worry… if I could do this track anyone can… haha

Of course we will provide food for the picnic and other entertainment along the way :) .

Price:
Access: FREE
Non-Access: $4
(Plus train ticket)

So here is what you need to know to take part:

When:

Sunday 2nd October

07:30 - 18:30

Where to Meet:
Everyone who does NOT live on the Western line (Penrith, Richmond line or Strathfield or Parramatta) must go to Central. We will all be waiting there for you :) . Everyone please be at Central at 8 SHARP or get there earlier (7:45) if you don’t trust yourself. The Train departs at 8:24 am. If you miss this you have to wait a whole half hour after to get the next one. The train arrives at Strathfield at 8:37 and Parramatta at 8:49. We are meeting in front of the HUNGRY JACKS at Central. This is the area in which the country link trains are. Essentially in front of the platform 9. You will need to buy a train ticket but it is very cheap for a place so far away! Its $10.00 for concession and $15.00 for those without concession. The train ride is long but chatting to friends should pass the time quickly

What do we do when we get there:
First we will go to Conservation Hut. (Directions http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=201469158042038966311.000499368b73ed3f3ad29) The directions are for cars, but it’s the same thing cause it wouldn’t let me save the walking one… It will take us 25 mins to get there haha sorry. Then we can eat there and rest up there before starting the bush walk. You can have a look at what the bush walks involves. I have been on a few bush walks and this by far is the best one that we want to take you guys on:
http://www.wildwalks.com/bushwalking-and-hiking-in-nsw/blue-mountains-wentworth-falls/national-pass-trail.html
It is meant to be a 3 and half hour walk although can be done in much less time but I assume with rests and you Asians taking heaps of photos we will take close to 3 and half to 4 hours maybe! :D

The best thing about this walk is that it leads to the waterfall area halfway through where we can have our picnic :D . We will then head back up to another area near the place we started and rest up before heading back. Rest assured you can have a long sleep on the train back if you are really tired. We will catch the 4:31 pm train back to central and be back by 6:30 pm.

What to bring:
- A hat
- Water
- Sun block
- Snacks to share
- Games (cards and such)
- A baby leash for those who are prone to getting lost without supervision

PACK LIGHTLY! Chopsticks will bring the main food that you guys will be eating :) , so don’t worry too much about that. But please do bring plenty of water!

More information on your request guys.

What a way to enjoy the last day of heaven outdoors with great company and great exercise! We look forward to see you soon!

Chopsticks Newsletter Week 10

Hello again incredible Chopstickers!!!

Thanks to all those who attended the Chopsticks Sports day & BBQ on Saturday at Centennial Park! It was lots of needed fun, and people got to work off some of that study-foo-belly.

One of our Chopsticks organizers described the day as a “comedy of errors. Missed 3 trains, missed bus stop 3 times”. But despite their inability to follow directions, the day progressed beautifully, with excellent weather too! One member described their day:
“Although i suffered some aching bones after playing volleyball (which was taught well by my teacher talibXD and my partner who told me to just ball up my fists to hit the ball)and felt very tired afterwards, I had a great time so thanks a lot to the ppl who organized it!”
- MW
Hopefully everyone had a great weekend! Now onto the coming weeks….

EVENTS!!!

CHOPSTICKS & VSA GAMES NIGHT + MOVIE NIGHT!

Just when you thought the Chopsticks Fortnightly Games Nights couldn’t get anymore interesting (or weirder for that matter), we bring you another surprise – a combined games night with VSA (Vietnamese Student Association).

Don’t ask how it happened. Rumour has it that Jas, whilst struggling to come up with original ideas for Games Nights over a bowl of phở, had a sudden profound realisation – the answer was sitting in the bowl in front of him. Or was it the other way around, with the VSA president, Trung, having an epiphany whilst snacking on dumplings with chopsticks? No one will ever know…

More importantly, however, what does this mean for you, our dearest clubs’ members?

> Double the fun – we get to play all our regular favourite games, this time with members from both societies
- MAFIA
- SanGuoSha
- Mahjong
- Jenga
- Card games
- Turtle soup riddles – Andy and Jason have been brewing them for a while, so watch out!

> Triple the snacks – as well as our regular munchies and drinks, we shall be serving PIZZA! And complementary popcorn for all movie viewers. Wait, there’s a movie?

> Movie screening – We’re watching ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’!! Come share this animated epic with us accompanied by the soft cushy lounge chairs of the International Student Lounge!

Come along! Whether you want to play games, catch a movie with friends, or meet new and exciting people from a different society, the Chopsticks & VSA Games+Movie Night has it all.

——-
Schedule
Date: Thursday Week 10 (12/05/11) at the International Student Lounge
3.00-5.00 – Games, snacks, socialising, PIZZA
5.00-7.00 – Movie screening + complementary popcorn

CHOPSTICKS GAMES NIGHT WEEK 11!

So we realize that life is getting really annoying with all of these assessments the last few weeks. Which is why Chopsticks brings you games night, two weeks in a row! Except in week 11, it will be a very laid back games night (aren’t they all?) so that you can just chillax with us, as we all attempt to unwind from the week.

Snacks are provided, as usual. So are the games mentioned in the previous games night.

By this time, you guys should know where and when. But here’s a quick reminder:

Where: Level 4 International Student Lounge, Wentworth Building
When: Thursday, 19 May
Time: 4-6pm

This games night can also be an opportunity to catch up with the people that you met the week before at the Chopsticks & VSA Games+Movie night. So come along and have fun!

—————–

Hope that we will see you all soon! Get ready for… MAFIAAAAAAAA!! If you have yet to learn how to play mafia, or are new to it and want to try your skill…. don’t hesitate to come along! Mafia, mafia, mafia!

Stick around, for great games and the screening of Howl’s Moving Castle….

Chopsticks Week 6 Update!

CHOPSTICKS MEMBERS!!!

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!!!!

Unfortunately SUV accidentally made a double booking on the night and so we are pushing “MY ASIAN KITCHEN RULES!” event to the next Thursday (14th April). We all know how much you guys have been looking forward to My Asian Kitchen Rules so to make up for it, we will be bringing Games Night (THE SURPRISE GAMES NIGHT) forward by a week to this Thursday so we can still see all your lovely faces =)

We’re really sorry about the change of date and hopefully you can all still make it!

ALSO if you are an international student be excited :D ! We are proud to promote the Justice Michael Kirby Plain Speaking Competition!! Details below!

Dear international students,

Think you’ve got the public speaking skills worth of Justice Michael Kirby? Well, you need to enter the Justice Michael Kirby Plain Speaking Competition.

Now in its fifth year, this competition offers students of all experience levels a chance to test and practice their public speaking skills in an environment that is both constructive and competitive. If that’s not enough of a reason to compete, here’s another sweetener: big prizes for the winner and finalists. In 2011 the USU will again be holding a separate International Students’ Division. It’s open only and caters specially to international students from non-English speaking countries. Such students may enter either division of competition, but not both.

Registrations open 1 March and close 8 April. Heats will be held during April and may, with the Grand Final scheduled for Thursday 12 May.

At each round, students will be judged on your delivery of two speeches: a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. Prepared speeches will be 4 – 5 minutes and are chosen by you from one of four topics:
1. Look before you leap
2. Fortune is blind, but not invisible
3. Every cloud has a silver lining
4. To define is to limit

For the impromptu speeches, students will be given 5 minutes preparation time to deliver a 3 minute speech. Each heat has a different impromptu topic which will be announced on the day. International Students will only be asked to perform a Prepared Speech.

To register download the Registration Form and email it to kirby@usu.usyd.edu.au or return it to the ACCESS Desk.
FOR MORE INFORMATION, GO HERE: http://www.usu.usyd.edu.au/Get_Involved/Competitions_Awards_Grants/Kirby_Cup/Default.aspx

Hope to see you in the competition!

Hopefully you will be able to make it to those events, where we can all gather and catch up =)
QUICK NOTE FOR NON-CHOPSTICKS MEMBERS: become one today. For $2 with Access, you’ll get to meet and greet so many great people that you wont regret it.
Despite what you may think; we are not a “Chinese society”, we are the “Australian Chinese Cultural Appreciation Society”.
So remember it.
And say hello to us.

Winter Holidays 2010!

Hello from the Chopsticks team!

We hope that all of your exams went well, and we shall sit here and clasp our hands together with the desire that we all receive the marks that we need… Really not kidding.
And so begins the Winter Holidays of 2010!! So Chopsticks members all around, those who are doing Winter School, going overseas or maybe even just sitting at home twiddling thumbs while waiting for the new semester… make sure you all stay safe and warm! Or cool… if you’re traveling to somewhere in the Northern hemisphere… Either way! Make sure you all come back to us in one piece, safe and sound!

And, when Semester 2 2010 does come around, be prepared for some more awesome fun, and bubbles of happiness that accompany our wonderful Chopsticks events!!! We’ve got quite a bit up our sleeve, that we can’t wait to share with you all… 8-)

Remember, if you’re not a Chopsticks member, you should really consider becoming one  ;-) Despite it being an Australian Chinese Cultural Appreciation society, this does not mean we aren’t multicultural!!

We look forward to seeing you all in the future!!

So until then! Stay wonderful!

- Best wishes~

Charity Night Success!

Hey everyone!

Thanks to all of you who came to our Chopsticks Charity Night and took the initiative to ‘Beer-A-Hero’ =] We hope you all had a great night of music, magic, dance, pizza, alcohol… and fire! As the result of your support, we’ve already raised $242.75 (without yet taking USU funding into account) to donate to the Oaktree Foundation to fight against poverty. =D

As this Semester comes to a close, we wish you all the best for your exams! Stay tuned for bigger and better Chopsticks events next semester… and maybe even during the winter holidays! But for now… study hard! Thanks again for coming! Good luck and ADD OIL++ !!!

Love
The Chopticks Team <3
